Introductory classes are offered on a weekly basis at Nā Kūpuna Makamae. All are welcome to join and weave with us! More advanced classes are given when students are ready to move on. Sign up for classes at Nā Kūpuna Makamae using the links or call them at 808-773-7047. Please see below for more information on classes.
These classes are all held at Nā Kūpuna Makamae in Kaka'ako on Wednesdays. Please register for these classes by contacting us and/or checking the Na Kupuna Makamae website. Please note that in addition to class material costs, Nā Kūpuna Makamae has an entry fee of $10 per session.
Weave a wide lauhala bracelet with natural and colored lau. Choose from available colors on the day. All materials are provided. Please bring a pair of scissors if can.
Learn to weave oeno, the basic pattern in lauhala weaving. This practice mat can be woven over and over again to practice with. Class cost includes instruction and lau kit. Proficiency in this class is required to advance to the Bottle Cover class.
Learn how to start a project with a piko and use your oeno weaving skills to create a bottle cover for a 40 oz. hydroflask type water bottle using natural and colored lau. Class cost includes instruction, lau kit, and water bottle.
*Prerequisite: Proficiency of Oeno Practice Mat
These classes are held at Nā Lālā O Ka Pūhala headquarters in Ewa Beach. Please contact us for more information on location, dates, and times.
Learn to weave a small oval mat with a piko, oeno weaving, and adds. Class cost includes instruction and lau kit. Class is held over 3 consecutive days and you must be able to attend all class days.
*Prerequisite: Proficiency in bottle cover with a second bottle cover completed with zero to minimal assistance.
Use all the skills you have learned to weave your first pāpale. Choose to weave a domed or flat top hat from beginning to end. Finish your pāpale by shaping it to its final style. Class cost includes pāpale instruction and lau kit. Lei po'o not included in class cost or instruction. Class is held over 5 consecutive days and you must be able to attend all class days.
*Prerequisite: Proficiency in oval mat with a second oval mat completed with zero to minimal assistance.
For those proficient in all other classes, specialty classes will be held throughout the year for various mini projects.
